    Applications of Graph Embedding in Mesh Untangling

    The subject of this thesis is mesh untangling through graph embedding, a method of laying out graphs on a planar surface, using an algorithm based on the work of Fruchterman and Reingold[1]. Meshes are a variety of graph used to represent surfaces with a wide number of applications, particularly in simulation and modelling. In the process of simulation, simulated forces can tangle the mesh through deformation and stress. The goal of this thesis was to create a tool to untangle structured meshes of complicated shapes and surfaces, including meshes with holes or concave sides. The goals of graph embedding, such as minimizing edge crossings align very well with the objectives of mesh untangling. I have designed and tested a tool which I named MUT (Mesh Untangling Tool) on meshes of various types including triangular, polygonal, and hybrid meshes. Previous methods of mesh untangling have largely been numeric or optimizationbased. Additionally, most untangling methods produce low quality graphs which must be smoothed separately to produce good meshes. Currently graph embedding techniques have only been used for smoothing of untangled meshes. I have developed a tool based on the Fruchterman-Reingold algorithm for force-directed layout[1] that effectively untangles and smooths meshes simultaneously using graph embedding techniques. It can untangle complicated meshes with irregular polygonal frames, internal holes, and other complications that previous methods struggle with. The MUT does this by using several different approaches: untangling the mesh in stages from the frame in and anchoring the mesh at corner points to stabilize the untangling

    The Impact of Climate Change on Hockey Expertise in the North Country and Adirondack Region of New York

    Climate change poses varied, and surprising, implications for social systems. We investigate one of those possible effects—the impact of a warming climate on outdoor ice availability and the social implications for hockey player development in the North Country region of New York. We approach this topic by applying a 10,000-hour budget of practice hours needed to become an expert player and assess the amount of outdoor ice available to meet that budget under two future warming scenarios. Our results show that the current amount outdoor ice hours available to a developing player remain the same at the end of the century under a low-emissions scenario equivalent to the targets set under the Paris Agreement. We also show that no outdoor ice would available for future player development at century’s end under a high emissions scenario, or the current greenhouse gas emissions pathway. These changes have implications for the regional identity of the North Country as a focal point of elite hockey development

    Electro-Muscle-to-Muscle Transfer

    The Electro Muscle to Muscle Transfer (EMMT) system will entail designing, manufacturing, and providing a wearable device that stimulates paralyzed muscles in the hand by sampling and amplifying muscles from the forearm. With further development, the system may be capable of using different muscle inputs other than the forearm muscles along with different stimulated muscle outputs other than the hand. The system functions as a rehabilitative device for spinal cord injuries, irreparable nerve loss and/or damage, and improper neuromuscular function. It is not for total treatment nor for curing of the disabilities listed above but to alleviate the side effects of the disability and help reduce muscular dysfunction

    Engineering of extracellular matrix scaffolds via hollow fiber cell culture

    Extracellular matrix (ECM) tissue scaffolds are seeing increased use for clinical applications, as they significantly decrease the time course of healing for injured tissues; however, the use of animal-sourced matrix for these scaffolds introduces xenogeneic epitopes into the patient toward which deleterious immune responses are directed, decreasing the effectiveness of the scaffold. ECM scaffolds produced in vitro have potential to minimize the foreign body response, as ECM can be cultured using human cell lines and decellularized to produce an allogeneic scaffold with high biocompatibility. The primary challenge of producing ECM-based therapeutics in vitro is fabricating such material in a manner which approximates the composition and architecture of native matrix while maintaining high yield and ease-of-handling. In previous work, we have demonstrated that sacrificial open-cell foams can be used for the production of ECM scaffolds with properties approximating those of native tissues.1 Herein we demonstrate a novel approach for the production of continuous threads of extracellular matrix by statically culturing ECM-secreting fibroblasts in the lumina of mesoporous hollow fiber membranes (HFMs). This approach exploits the fact that mesoporous HFMs prevent cross-membrane transport of high molecular weight proteins produced by cells in their lumina, while allowing for diffusion of low molecular weight cell medium components. This report highlights funding trends and gaps in 2015-2021, as well as recommendations for smarter investment for people and planet.99% of the world's population breathes air that exceeds World Health Organization air quality guidelines. Cleaning the air is a massive opportunity to improve public health and climate change. Because air pollution and climate change are mainly caused by burning fossil fuels, these problems can be tackled together. By addressing these issues in isolation, funders and policymakers drastically overlook the potential of clean air to realise multiple health, social and sustainable economic benefits.Our fourth annual report is the only global snapshot of projects funded by international development funders and philanthropic foundations to tackle air pollution. We identify gaps in funding, and opportunities for strategic investment and collaboration for systemic change.?As the world prepares for COP27 in Egypt, we call for more joined up policies and funding to address air pollution, climate change and unsustainable economic growth simultaneously.     The team of five, who staffed the stand and conducted the rapid roving survey, spoke to over 370 people attending the event in person (~50% of in-person attendees). Attendance at the event fulfilled the intended aims. Over the course of three days, the UK-SCAPE Team enhanced recognition of i) UKCEH and our role in delivering NERC funded national capability; ii) the quantity and quality of freely available UK-SCAPE data; iii) the range of monitoring and survey taking place across terrestrial environments (land, water, air, soils); and iv) reinforced the principle of co-designing delivery and use of the data

    Comparison of triploid and diploid rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) fine-scale movement, migration and catchability in lowland lakes of western Washington

    Fisheries managers stock triploid (i.e., infertile, artifcially produced) rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss in North American lakes to support sport fsheries while minimizing the risk of genetic introgression between hatchery and wild trout. In Washington State, the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) allocates approximately US $3 million annually to stock hatchery-origin rainbow trout in>600 lakes, yet only about 10% of them are triploids. Many lakes in Washington State drain into waters that support wild anadromous steelhead O. mykiss that are listed as threatened under the U.S. Endangered Species Act. As a result, there is a strong interest in understanding the costs and benefts associated with stocking sterile, triploid rainbow trout as an alternative to traditional diploids. The objectives of this study were to compare triploid and diploid rainbow trout in terms of: (1) contribution to the sport fshery catch, (2) fne-scale movements within the study lakes, (3) rate of emigration from the lake, and (4) natural mortality. Our results demonstrated that triploid and diploid trout had similar day-night distribution patterns, but triploid trout exhibited a lower emigration rate from the lake and lower catch rates in some lakes. Overall, triploid rainbow trout represent a viable alternative to stocking of diploids, especially in lakes draining to rivers, because they are sterile, have comparable home ranges, and less often migrat

    Measuring the effects of listening for leisure on outcome after stroke (MELLO):A pilot randomized controlled trial of mindful music listening

    Background: Cognitive deficits and low mood are common post-stroke. Music listening is suggested to have beneficial effects on cognition, while mindfulness may improve mood. Combining these approaches may enhance cognitive recovery and improve mood early post-stroke. Aims: To assess the feasibility and acceptability of a novel mindful music listening intervention. Methods: A parallel group randomized controlled feasibility trial with ischemic stroke patients, comparing three groups; mindful music listening, music listening and audiobook listening (control group), eight weeks intervention. Feasibility was measured using adherence to protocol and questionnaires. Cognition (including measures of verbal memory and attention) and mood (Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale) were assessed at baseline, end of intervention and at six-months post-stroke. Results: Seventy-two participants were randomized to mindful music listening (n = 23), music listening (n = 24), or audiobook listening (n = 25). Feasibility and acceptability measures were encouraging: 94% fully consistent with protocol; 68.1% completing ≥6/8 treatment visits; 80–107% listening adherence; 83% retention to six-month endpoint. Treatment effect sizes for cognition at six month follow-up ranged from d = 0.00 ([−0.64,0.64], music alone), d = 0.31, ([0.36,0.97], mindful music) for list learning; to d = 0.58 ([0.06,1.11], music alone), d = 0.51 ([−0.07,1.09], mindful music) for immediate story recall; and d = 0.67 ([0.12,1.22], music alone), d = 0.77 ([0.16,1.38]mindful music) for attentional switching compared to audiobooks. No signal of change was seen for mood. A definitive study would require 306 participants to detect a clinically substantial difference in improvement (z-score difference = 0.66, p = 0.017, 80% power) in verbal memory (delayed story recall). Conclusions: Mindful music listening is feasible and acceptable post-stroke. Music listening interventions appear to be a promising approach to improving recovery from stroke
